Project Breakdown

Location: Taronga Avenue, Mount St Thomas
Bedrooms: 4
Time to Completion: 14 Weeks

Mount St Thomas is a coastal Hamptons style build situated in the suburb of Mount St Thomas, just south of the the Wollongong CBD. The client brief for this project was 'white', and that drove many aspects of the design and construction including both the materials and suppliers used.

The existing property was a classic mid 20th century suburban Australian house, with hardwood frames and horsehair sheeting throughout the interior. The initial plan was to try and retain some of the existing materials, however once demolition commenced it was decided that the best course of action was to completely strip the walls, ceiling and roof, leaving the hardwood frames as a skeleton on which to add the new extension.

The rear extension incorporates a large open plan kitchen and entertaining area which is a significant departure from the small pokey kitchen in the existing property. We worked with the client to maximise light in the new extension, installing four Velux skylights as well as a long glass splash-back that runs the entire length of the kitchen bench.

The main entertaining area makes use of beautiful engineered oak flooring, keeping the space as bright as possible. The client complimented this by choosing brushed stainless fittings for the taps, bench drawers, door handles and fittings, all produced by ABI Interiors. The end result is a space that is bright and full of life, but still has the warmth and character of a welcoming family home.
